University Partnerships Advancing Interdisciplinary Initiatives
The SOF/Heyman fosters initiatives and projects that bring together researchers from across the University to address questions that exceed the capacity of any one discipline to answer. Our goal is to produce knowledge that increases the impact of humanities thinking in understanding our world.
Health and Medical Humanities
The Health and Medical Humanities Initiative provides an ongoing forum at SOF/Heyman to explore the challenges inherent in bringing together disciplines as diverse as medicine and the humanities, and the benefits that arise from doing so.
Critical Data Studies Initiative
The Critical Data Studies Initiative brings humanities thinking and area studies expertise to bear in considering the socioeconomic, military, and industrial interests that have formed the study of GenAI and LLMs.
Computational Humanities Initiative
As computational methods increasingly reshape knowledge production, partnership between humanists and computer scientists has become more possible and more valuable. This Initiative seeks to create opportunities for those from the humanities and technical fields to discover shared research interests, exchange methodological expertise, develop collaborative projects, and disseminate their findings.
Law and the Humanities
This Initiative provides an ongoing forum to explore the ties that continue to bind together legal order, linguistic competence, historical memory, and the human imagination.
Climate Programming
Our diverse climate programming seeks to explore our most complex planetary and social issues. The SOF/Heyman brings together transdisciplinary artists and scholars, climate scientists, engineers, political ecologists and other experts from across the schools of the University and beyond to present their work and discuss climate change and sustainability challenges.
Justice-in-Education Initiative
The JIE Initiative provides formerly incarcerated individuals with opportunities in higher education while contributing to the growing movement to end mass incarceration.
Public Books
An online magazine of criticism and ideas drawn from across contemporary higher education, Public Books is a rich and diverse forum where experts are trained in public scholarship, and readers engage seriously with scholarly ideas. Housed in the office of the SOF/Heyman, Public Books exists as an online periodical that propels scholarly expertise beyond academia and as the Public Books podcasts.
