Society of Fellows and Buell Fellow Sonali Dhanpal was recently awarded a Spring 2025 Research Support Grant by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Yale University, toward research costs for the project Housing ‘Race Relations’: The Making of post-war Britain at the End of Empire. Dhanpal has also been invited by the Paul Mellon Centre to present a related talk, Surveys, Settlements and Registers: Drawing Land into a “Racial” Regime of Property in Colonial Bangalore, in November 2025.

In publication news, Dhanpal’s book project has been selected for the American Institute of Indian Studies Dissertation-to-Book Workshop at the Annual Conference on South Asia at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Her paper Housing Empire’s Subjects: Moral Panics at the “End of Empire” and Race in the British Welfare State was recently published in Grey Room 101 as part of a Special Issue on state Effects, edited by SOF Board members Lucia Allais and Zeynep Çelik Alexander.
