Emily Ogden (Society of Fellows 2010–2013) has been awarded a 2024 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant for Frailties: How Poe Helps Us Live with Ourselves (to be published by Viking Penguin), a biography in essays of Edgar Allan Poe that approaches a risky degree of intimacy with its subject and traces the mark his life and work left on notable admirers, including Charles Baudelaire, Marie Bonaparte, and Julio Cortázar. The judges of the prize said that Ogden's new work is "alive with a desire to cross-pollinate genre. Frailties is a bravura hybrid of biography, memoir, and philosophy. Ogden binds us to Edgar Allan Poe at his wildest and most terrifying, where he has the most to teach us."

The $40,000 Creative Nonfiction Grants are awarded by The Whiting Foundation to writers in the process of completing a book of deeply researched and imaginatively composed nonfiction. The grant encourages original and ambitious projects by giving recipients the additional means to do exacting research and devote time to composition.
