February 13, 2015

Oxford University Press is publishing The Oxford Handbook of Roman Philosophy in 2015, edited by W.H. Shearin and Richard Fletcher. Dana Fields, our Fellow from 2010-2013, penned the chapter "Parrhēsia: Dio, Diatribe, and Philosophical Oratory." The publication will feature forty-two chapters and an introduction. Other contributors to this volume include Dr. James Warren (Corpus Christi, Oxford University), Ivor John Davidson (University of St. Andrews), Phillip Horky (Durham University), and James Ker (The University of Pennslyvania). Dio was a Greek orator, writer, philosopher and historian of the Roman Empire in the 1st century. Parrhēsia is a term used in ancient rhetoric to describe both speaking candidly and asking forgiveness for so speaking. This topic has been a frequent subject of Professor Fields's research.

Professor Fields is an Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Buffalo. She is also currently preparing a book titled Speaking Freely: Rhetoric, Politics, Philosophy, and Mockery in Imperial Greece.
