Committed to a Vibrant and Inclusive Intellectual Community That Encourages Connections between Scholars
As part of our commitment to fostering a vibrant intellectual community that encourages connections between scholars of various disciplines and at different career stages, the SOF/Heyman offers several fellowship opportunities for graduate students and faculty, at Columbia University and beyond.
Society of Fellows
The Society of Fellows in the Humanities brings together exceptional early career scholars to be part of a cross-disciplinary community. In addition to teaching opportunities in affiliated departments and time for research, Fellows support each others’ intellectual and professional development through lecture series, workshops, and other opportunities.
Open to recent PhDs, the fellowship is designed to strengthen the intellectual and academic qualifications of the Fellows by affording time and resources to develop independent scholarship within a broadening educational and professional context.

Heyman Center Fellows

Funded by the Office of the Executive Vice-President of the Arts & Sciences, the SOF/Heyman Center Fellowship provides Columbia faculty with course relief during the academic year to allow time for research and to participate in a weekly seminar. In addition to providing the opportunity to present work-in-progress, the seminar fosters discussion across disciplines and fields, creating opportunities for collaborative research and teaching in future semesters.
Public Humanities Graduate Fellows
Intended for graduate students interested in expanding their humanities beyond academia, this year-long fellowship offers workshops in public humanities methods, mentorship, networking opportunities, and financial support for projects in partnership with a community organization or non-profit.

Edward W. Said Fellows

This research award supports researchers early in their careers whose scholarship speaks across disciplinary boundaries, promotes humanistic inquiry in the service of intercultural communication and understanding, and addresses pressing global issues in the public sphere.
Trinity Long Room Hub and SOF/Heyman Short-term Visiting Fellows
The Trinity Long Room Hub (TLRH)—the humanities center of Trinity College Dublin—and the Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia (SOF/Heyman) welcome applications from tenured, tenure-track, and tenure-equivalent faculty for short-term visiting fellowships in Dublin or New York.
