Note: This working group is closed to the public.
Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Social Difference (CSSD) at Columbia University, "Refugee Cities: Urban Dimensions of Forced Displacement." is a working group funded for a two-year cycle in 2022-23 and 2023-24 (with the possibility of the funding being extended for a third year).
The group will convene in person at Columbia on a regular basis to engage in productive, interdisciplinary conversations along the lines of our shared interests at the intersection of urban studies on the one hand and, on the other, the humanistic and social justice-oriented study of the mass movement of people fleeing interethnic violence, war, and forced removal. The group's co-directors, Bahia Munem (Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, Columbia University) and Amy Chazkel (History, Columbia University), working with a core group of participants, will organize two public symposia (in Spring '23 and Spring '24) and will provide opportunities for collaborations ranging from co-teaching to academic publishing to public-facing scholarship.
