The abolition of private property is a refrain that traces to antiquity, but its modern form emerged at the time of other abolitionist movements. This seminar will explore the most influential writings and thought on the abolition of property, Marx and Engels’ The Communist Manifesto and Proudhon’s writings on property.

This seminar will open with a performance by singer Theo Bleckmann. Professors Amy Allen, Étienne Balibar, Karuna Mantena, and Bernard E. Harcourt read and discuss Manifesto of the Communist Party by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, Critique of the Gotha Programme by Karl Marx, and What is Property? by Pierre Joseph Proudhon.
